Gary Goodson, 46, an administrator in Temple City schools for 20 years, has become superintendent of the San Gabriel School District. The San Gabriel school board has approved a two-year contract that will pay Goodson $60,000 a year. Goodson, who lives in Brea, holds a doctorate in education from USC and bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Whittier College. He is currently assistant superintendent for instruction in Temple City. He and his wife, Marian, a first-grade teacher in Walnut, are the parents of three children.

Claremont resident Dorothy Sundgren Davis has been appointed to the Los Angeles Consumer Affairs Commission by Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Chairman Pete Schabarum. The commission submits recommendations for changes in procedures, programs and legislation on consumer affairs to the board of supervisors.

Philip Hanlon and David Gabai, mathematicians at Caltech in Pasadena, have been awarded Sloan Research Fellowships for $25,000 each from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation in New York. Hanlon, a former math professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has taught at Caltech for three years. Gabai became an associate professor at Caltech at the beginning of June.

Alfred Balitzer of Claremont McKenna College has been appointed to a six-year term on the National Graduate Fellows Program Fellowship Board by President Reagan. Balitzer received his doctorate from Claremont and was an adviser to the 1984 Reagan-Bush campaign.

Covina attorney Jay H. Davison has been named board president of the San Gabriel Valley Lawyer Referral Service. The service is a nonprofit public service organization.
