Compton : Schools Chief Quits Again

Only nine months after leaving Compton to become school superintendent in Cleveland, Ronald A. Boyd has resigned under fire, complaining of the same kind of “board politics” that prompted his Cleveland predecessor to commit suicide.

Boyd, a 45-year-old former deputy superintendent of the Compton Unified School District, will continue until a replacement can be found, then collect $300,000 for the balance of his four-year contract, according to Cleveland Board President Joseph G. Tegreene.

The Cleveland district, with 79,000 pupils, 68% of them black, has had seven superintendents since a federal court ordered desegregation in 1978. Cleveland school board member James M. Carney said he called for the superintendent’s resignation in part because Boyd had allegedly predicted a budget deficit of $22 million at the same time state examiners reported an apparent $12.5-million surplus.
