Norway to Eliminate Whaling

OSLO — Giving in to pressure from the United States and the International Whaling Commission, the Norwegian government announced today that it will stop commercial whaling, at least temporarily, in two years.
A government statement said the allowable commercial catch, halved to 350 Minke whales this season, will be cut again next year and eliminated in 1987. The decision followed heavy pressure on Norway from the whaling group and the United States, which had moved to boycott Norwegian fish over the issue. The Norwegian statement said whaling will be halted while the whaling commission studies whale stocks.
