Troops Open Santiago Streets

SANTIAGO, Chile — Army troops surrounded militant slum areas and kept the city’s main roads open today to keep public transport running on the second day of a 48-hour general strike against the military government.
Soldiers who patrolled the city in armored cars and trucks cleared away burning tires that blocked the streets and then guarded bus stops and garages. Public transportation was running at half its normal pace, but more people were getting to work than on Wednesday.
