The Nation : Teacher Standards Urged

The head of the nation’s largest teachers’ union said she would ask delegates to the group’s convention to endorse a proposed national board to set minimum standards for teachers. Mary Hatwood Futrell, president of the 1.8-million member National Education Assn., spoke at a news conference at the ,convention of 8,000 delegates meeting through Sunday in Louisville, Ky. She said such a board could silence doubts about teachers’ professional status without exacerbating the teacher shortage.
