The Nuclear Regulatory Commission, in a policy statement, called for future nuclear power plant reactors to have simplified safety and shutdown systems that require fewer actions by operators. The commission’s regulatory program for “advanced design reactors,” published in the Federal Register, provides broad guidelines for the nuclear industry to follow in designing the next generation of reactors. The NRC statement called also for better instrumentation to detect crisis conditions and equipment that is more easily maintained.
