Island National Park

I enjoyed Grant Gerrish’s article on traveling by train in Queensland, Australia (July 6). However, his reference to Magnetic Island as “the world’s largest island national park” is mistaken. It is true that in 1770 Capt. Cook named the island because of problems that it caused his compass. Apparently, it also causes trouble with yardsticks. Hinchenbrook Island, about 100 miles north of Townsville, is the world’s largest island national park, with an area of approximately 231 square miles. Magnetic Island is only approximately 20 square miles.
