A 30-year-old construction worker in Costa Mesa was fatally injured in a freak accident as he walked by co-workers who were using a nail gun, police said. A four-inch nail used to attach boards to a concrete block wall struck Salbador A. Bernal of San Fernando as he walked through an apartment construction site at 1421 Village Way about 1:40 p.m. Officers said the nail, which apparently passed through a board and missed the wall, struck Bernal in the right shoulder and entered his chest. Bernal died 40 minutes later at Fountain Valley Regional Hospital.
