A Maryknoll missionary working in Peru has become the 25th nun to be threatened with expulsion from her order for signing a statement on abortion published during the 1984 U.S. election campaign. In a July 24 letter to Sister Rose Dominic Trapasso, she was told that the Vatican wanted her to “make a public retraction of her opposition to the teaching of the church” on abortion. The 1984 statement called for “candid and respectful discussion” of differences among theologians on abortion.
