Kasparov, Karpov Adjourn 14th Game

MOSCOW — World chess champion Gary Kasparov and challenger Anatoly Karpov adjourned the 14th game of their title match in Leningrad on Monday, and experts said Kasparov has a good chance to win when play resumes.
Kasparov, playing white and leading 7 to 6 in the match, sealed his 41st move. The game is to resume today.
Kasparov’s strong position came after a complicated struggle in which both sides became short of time for their final moves.
In the opening, Kasparov played a Ruy Lopez for the first time in the match.
By move 25, experts said it was very hard to predict which side was in a better position. By move 31, assessments had changed, and Karpov’s position became unfavorable.
The contest runs 24 games with a victory counting one point and a draw half a point for each player. The winner will be the first player to score six victories or 12 1/2 points. In the event of a tie after the 24 games, Kasparov retains his title.
