Health and Human Services Secretary Otis R. Bowen announced the establishment of a single national network to facilitate the transplanting of human organs. Bowen said that a $379,200 grant has been awarded to the United Network for Organ Sharing Inc. of Richmond, Va., to establish the network, which combines the United Network operation with that of the “24-ALERT” telephone service run by the North American Transplant Coordinators Organization in Pittsburgh. United Network keeps a nationwide recipient registry and computer matching system for kidney transplants.
