VATICAN CITY — Pope John Paul II sent a message Saturday to Archbishop Arturo Rivera y Damas of San Salvador, conveying his grief to relatives of the earthquake victims. Part of the Pope’s message said:
“Profoundly stricken by the sad news of the earthquake that has caused numerous victims and serious material damage, principally in San Salvador. I am praying fervently to the Almighty for the eternal rest of the dead. . . .
“I impart from my heart my apostolic blessing, extending it to those who, moved by sentiments of Christian pity, are providing effective help to those who are suffering.”
