Judge Lifts Freeze on Evictions; Way Cleared for Units

A judge lifted a freeze on the eviction of about 150 people in 27 Santa Ana homes Monday, clearing the way for ground breaking of an apartment development.
Orange County Superior Court Judge Harmon G. Scoville found that Santa Ana officials did nothing wrong in approving the new construction and that Classic Redevelopment Corp. was within its rights to evict tenants.
Classic plans to tear down 43 single-family homes and build 270 two-story apartments along West 5th Street.
Lawyers for the tenants claimed that they had not been properly notified of the building plans and that relocation assistance was inadequate.
Irene Correa, a Classic official, said tenants were notified 30 days before construction was to begin, received refunds of rent deposits and were awarded “several hundred dollars” each to help them find new places to live.
Scoville gave lawyers for the tenants until Oct. 23 to appeal.
