A preliminary autopsy disclosed that Shawn Akina, a 19-year-old University of Utah football player, had a defective heart that caused a fatal heart attack while he was lifting weights.
University Police Chief Wayne Shepherd said a report from the state medical examiner’s office showed Akina, a walk-on quarterback from Honolulu, died Saturday because of “abnormalities” in his heart.
