Train Derails, Sparking Gas Main Break, Fire

CINCINNATI — A natural gas main at the scene of a freight train derailment ruptured and caught fire Saturday, shooting a 200-foot tongue of flame into the air before the gas line was turned off.
Police evacuated the area west of downtown that is occupied by warehouses and office supply stores. Only minor injuries were reported, but authorities said it was fortunate that the accident did not occur during the week, when “there would be literally thousands of workers in the area.”
The cause of both the derailment and the gas main rupture were under investigation.
