Iran-Contra Connection: Reagan’s Watergate?
The White House is surprised to discover that Lt. Col. North covertly arranged the funneling of arms sales proceeds to the contras. A White House official is quoted as saying that “North was the most dangerous man in the U.S. government.” What a lot of hogwash! North was only the logical extension of what has been President Reagan’s policy all along: get covert aid to the contras any way you can, whether or not Congress approves.
And if Reagan did not know of this particular operation, it was only because he did not want to know.
North may have been a loose cannon, but he was Reagan’s agent, make no mistake about it. The wrong man has been scapegoated, but then it is a lot harder to fire the President.
