Wayne C. Patterson, the president and chief operating officer of the laboratories, has become the chief executive at the reference laboratories, replacing Dr. Albert Nichols, who remains the company’s chairman, president and chief executive. Patterson, 51, of San Clemente joined the company in 1980 and is a corporate vice president.
