A 13-year-old runaway boy hiding in a garbage bin was dumped into a Tulare garbage truck but escaped injury even though the truck’s compactor partly crushed the load. The boy, whose name was not released because of his age, was scooped up in a bin at Dairymen’s Cooperative Creamery Assn. The truck driver, Eduardo Ramirez, said he did not hear or see the boy, but another sanitation worker spotted the youngster when the boy jumped out as the load was being dumped at a landfill east of Tulare. Officials speculated that wooden pallets in the load may have kept it from being compacted enough to crush the boy.
