Stay of Execution Granted to Killer by Federal Judge

SAN ANTONIO — U.S. District Judge Dorwin Suttle granted a stay of execution Tuesday for John R. Thompson, who was scheduled to die today for shooting to death a 70-year-old woman. Thompson’s attorney said his appeal included the assertion that prosecutors reneged on an offer of a life sentence if Thompson agreed to plead guilty.
