LONDON — The U.S. dollar fell sharply against all major currencies in active, sometimes nervous activity in Europe today, hitting a six-year low for European trading against the West German mark.
The absence of any sign that West Germany’s central bank will intervene to buy dollars to prop up the U.S. currency sent the dollar tumbling in Frankfurt to 1.7750 marks, its lowest since Aug. 6, 1980. The British pound was selling at its highest level against the dollar since June, 1983.
