NORFOLK, Va. — A mysterious oil spill off the Virginia-North Carolina coast has saturated more than 100 birds with heavy coats of oil that may kill more than half of them, a wildlife refuge manager said Thursday.
Since Tuesday, 110 oil-soaked loons and grebes have been captured near the Back Bay Wildlife Refuge, said Anthony Leger, manager of the federal refuge.
A Coast Guard spokesman said that helicopters and shore patrols have been unable to find an offshore oil slick or pinpoint the cause of the spill.
