The World : U.N. Decries Executions

Hundreds of arbitrary executions were carried out around the world last year, the United Nations reported. The report--prepared by S. Amos Wako of Kenya, a U.N. special researcher, for the 43-nation U.N. Human Rights Commission--blamed the executions in places like Iraq, Liberia, Sri Lanka and Brazil on “a fundamental absence of understanding and respect for the right to life” among the military. Wako expressed hope about newly restored democracies where such killings were alleged under past regimes, including Argentina, Guatemala, Peru, Uganda and the Philippines.
