BAGHDAD, Iraq — President Saddam Hussein has confirmed death sentences passed on a former mayor of Baghdad and four officials for taking bribes, the official Iraqi news agency INA said Monday.
Former Mayor Abdul Wahab Mohammed Latif Al Mufti, fired last June, had accepted bribes and commissions from foreign firms since 1979 in exchange for information on projects in Iraq, INA quoted a presidential decree as saying.
The information was used by the companies to prepare competitive offers while the five officials received payoffs in hard currency deposited in overseas bank accounts, the agency said.
