The president of a major U.S. petroleum refiner said the United States faces an energy crisis in the next decade that will make the oil shortages of the “1970s pale by comparison.” Roger Hemminghaus, president of Diamond Shamrock Refining & Marketing Co., told an energy conference organized by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in Dallas that by 1990 the United States would be 50% dependent on foreign oil if present rates of consumption and domestic production continue.
