A military tribunal in Moscow convicted a former Soviet army officer of war crimes for joining forces with the Nazis in World War II and shooting civilians and burning villages. Senior Lt. A.D. Tarakanov was sentenced to death, Tass news agency said. It did not explain why he was not brought to trial until more than 40 years after the war. “Tarakanov participated in punitive operations against guerrillas and executions of Soviet patriots in the Smolensk and Bryansk regions,” Tass said.
