East German Eludes Guards, Flees to West

KASSEL, West Germany — A 29-year-old East German man apparently escaped the notice of Communist border guards to flee over his country’s heavily guarded border into West Germany, police said Tuesday.
The escape late Monday was the third in three days and brought to 14 the number of East Germans who have fled to West Germany or West Berlin this year.
West German border police in Kassel said the man escaped near the town of Meissner in northern Hesse state, about 124 miles north of Frankfurt.
Police said the man was a metalworker, but they did not identify him in keeping with government policy on escapees.
On Saturday, two East German men escaped over the border into West Germany’s Lower Saxony state.
