Golf Roundup : Douglass Has Share of Lead After a 67

Defending champion Dale Douglass shot a five-under-par 67 Friday to move into a three-way tie for first place with Bobby Nichols and Bob Charles in the $300,000 Vintage Chrysler Invitational seniors tournament at Indian Wells.
Douglass rebounded from a first-round 75 with six birdies on the Vintage Club’s 6,907-yard, par- 72 Mountain Course, giving him a 36-hole total of 142.
Nichols and Charles both shot 70s. Both played the 6,240-yard, par-72 Desert Course.
The leaders had a two-shot advantage over Walter Zembriski, who shot 68 on the Desert Course.
First-round leader Miller Barber soared to a 77 and is tied with Chi Chi Rodriguez at 148.
Also being contested is the $33,000 Vantage super seniors tournament for professionals 60 years of age and older. Leading the 54-hole event heading into today’s final round is George Bayer, who had a 71 Friday, giving him a two-round total of 144 and a one-shot lead over first-round leader Howie Johnson, who shot a 75.
Dick Mast shot a four-under-par 68 to retain his one-stroke lead over Bob Gilder after two rounds of the $500,000 USF&G; tournament at New Orleans.
Mast, the first-round leader after a 64, birdied two of the final four holes to reach the midway mark at 132, 12 under par.
Gilder, who set the course record at Lakewood Country Club’s par-72, 7,080-yard layout with a 62 in 1979, also shot 68.
Jim Thorpe threatened Gilder’s record, coming in with a 63. He was two shots off the pace along with Ben Crenshaw and Ronnie Black. Thorpe one-putted 13 greens.
Jan Stephenson maintained her two-stroke lead despite problems with her drives during the second round of the $200,000 LPGA Tucson Open.
Stephenson’s round of 70 included several par-saving putts for a 36-hole total of 137 over the 6,214-year par-72 municipal Randolph North Golf Course.
Sally Quinlan shot the day’s low round, a 68, to take over second place at 139.
Jill Briles bettered her opening round 72 by three strokes for a 141 total. She was joined by Betsy King, last year’s runner-up, Shelly Hamlin, as each posted a 71, Sherri Turner (70) and Lauri Peterson (72).
