LEXINGTON, Ky. — The formation of a new non-scholarship football league, the Mid-South Football Conference, will initially consist of five Kentucky colleges and one Indiana university.
League play will begin this fall with a six-team league featuring Campbellsville, Cumberland, Georgetown, Kentucky Wesleyan, Union and the University of Evansville, said conference chairman James Taylor, the president of Cumberland College.
Taylor told a Lexington news conference that two of the schools, Evansville and Georgetown, will phase out their scholarship programs in football in order to join the conference.
Taylor said the conference will name co-champions for schools with scholarship players and those without until all of the scholarship players have departed the two schools, when one conference champion will be named. Two of the conference members are NCAA Division III schools, and four are members of the NAIA.
