St. Lucia Plans New Vote for April 30

CASTRIES, St. Lucia — St. Lucians will vote again April 30 for a new government.
Prime Minister John Compton’s United Workers Party, which has ruled this West Indies island for 20 of the past 23 years, won a scant 9-8 majority in the House of Assembly in the April 6 national election. The opposition St. Lucia Labor Party won the other eight seats in the Parliament.
Compton said Tuesday he thinks that new elections are necessary because, with only a one-vote majority, the possibility of a no-confidence vote always would be present and would affect the confidence of foreign investors in the country.
