The naming of a new junior high school in Mira Mesa after the ill-fated space shuttle Challenger was postponed for two weeks Tuesday by the San Diego Board of Education to see if there are any objections from a community committee that recommended the name of teacher-astronaut Christa McAuliffe.
In other action, the board adopted new math textbooks for grades kindergarten through eight that are intended to make the curriculum more rigorous. It agreed to spend $438,000 to improve the running track at Balboa Stadium used by San Diego High School. All but $77,778 of that cost will come from various public and private agencies interested in having a professional-quality outdoor track.
