Catatonic, who was shipped in from Maryland for the race, won the $229,200 Hempstead Handicap by a head over Ms. Eloise at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y.

It was the third stakes win in her last five starts but the first in a Grade I event for Catatonic, who was ridden by Don Miller Jr.

Catatonic covered the 1 1/8 miles in 1:50 and earned $137,520. She paid $24.20, $7.20 and $3.60 as the fourth choice in the field. Ms. Eloise paid $3.20 and $2.60, and Steal A Kiss returned $3.80 to show.
