Tekelec in Calabasas has named Peter Vicars president and a member of the company’s board of directors. Vicars succeeds Philip Black, who was named vice chairman.
Black, 32, became president and chief executive officer in 1982. In May, 1986, during Black’s tenure, Tekelec went public.
A slowdown in spending in both the United States and Japan has hurt the company, which makes telecommunications testing equipment. For the first quarter of fiscal 1987, Tekelec’s profits fell 73%.
A spokesman for the company said Black’s new position was his own idea. “It is not a case at all of having the board come along and push him out,” said spokeswoman Marcie Walker.
Before joining Tekelec Monday, Vicars held senior management positions with Lancore Technologies in Westlake Village, Qume Memory Products, Micropolis and Perkin-Elmer.
