The Soviet Union and the United States have accepted invitations to visit chemical weapons sites in each other’s countries to observe procedures for destroying those weapons, a U.S. spokesman said. The exchange was confirmed during the sixth round of bilateral talks in Geneva between the superpowers aimed at achieving a global ban on chemical weapons. The Soviets will visit Tooele Army Depot in Utah, where such weapons are stored and destroyed, the week of Oct. 19. The Soviets said arrangements are being worked out for U.S. experts to visit a similar storage depot and a destruction plant now being built.
