Sinkhole Forces Out Apartment Dwellers

OCALA, Fla. — A 20-foot-deep sinkhole under an apartment building forced the evacuation of eight families, and officials who filled the pit with concrete Thursday said heavy rain could make it bigger.
Officials said that, unless the weather stayed dry, the concrete might not set properly and the 10-foot-diameter sinkhole under the 14-unit Sutton Place building could widen.
“They’ve filled it up with concrete up to the foundation, and they say it looks pretty good,” fire department dispatcher Pam Stepp said. “Now they’re hoping it won’t rain.”
The families evacuated Wednesday were to remain homeless at least until today, department spokesman Barry Britton said.
