An assistant White House press secretary and a press office aide were trapped in a Sheraton Santa Barbara Hotel elevator for 45 minutes. Mark Weinberg finally managed to force the elevator door open to free himself and aide Elizabeth Murphy. A member of the White House staff heard them calling for help and notified hotel management personnel. A Santa Barbara Fire Department rescue squad, however, was unable to open the door. Weinberg pried it open from the inside after the power was shut off.
