Cuomo Lobbies for National Panel on Economic Ills

WASHINGTON — New York Gov. Mario M. Cuomo lobbied congressional leaders Wednesday for a National Economic Commission that would be unencumbered by political constraints in fashioning solutions to economic problems.
Cuomo planned to meet with Senate Democratic leader Robert C. Byrd of West Virginia, Senate Republican leader Bob Dole of Kansas, Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan, (D-N.Y.), Sen. Alfonse M. D’Amato, (R-N.Y.), and House Republican leader Robert H. Michel of Illinois. Cuomo was accompanied by former Commerce Secretary Peter G. Peterson, who is helping to promote the commission.
Cuomo, who proposed the idea of the commission six months ago, told a House Banking subcommittee the commission should present its recommendations after next year’s presidential election to ensure that its work is not entangled in campaign politics.
After the election, he said, the next President would be welcomed into office by a list of policy options with bipartisan backing.
