Crashed Jet Called Mechanically Sound

DETROIT — The Northwest Airlines jet that crashed at Detroit Metropolitan Airport in August took off with all key systems working normally, a newspaper reported Friday.
The Detroit News, quoting unidentified sources, said the plane had no “deferred maintenance items,” meaning inspectors had not cited problems that needed repairs before the crash of Flight 255, which killed 156 people. The National Transportation Safety Board will begin public hearings into the crash on Monday.
Investigators were looking for indications that the flaps and warning system had experienced problems before the day of the crash, the newspaper said.
