Many of the estimated 65,000 fans who saw U2’s concert Wednesday night at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum might still be wondering about those mysterious Dalton Brothers, who performed unannounced, prior to a set by the Pretenders. The shaggy looking country music outfit called itself “a band from Galveston, Tex., that has been a big influence on both U2 and the Pretenders.” Turned out to be the four members of U2 themselves wearing fake wigs and cowboy hats and, in one case, a mini-skirt. Bono Hewson and guitarist Edge each sang lead on one song as bassist Adam Clayton masqueraded as one of the Daltons’ sisters, Betty. Only fans seated closest to the stage--or hard-core U2 followers--probably realized that their heroes were on stage. U2 announced Thursday that it will conclude its U.S. tour with two $5-a-ticket concerts Dec. 19 and 20 at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Ariz.
