On two occasions recently, Los Angeles police stopped groups of college students--the first from USC, the second from Pepperdine--about to change the message on the landmark sign that looms over Hollywood. Altering of the sign, which was erected in 1923 to promote a housing subdivision (HOLLYWOODLAND), has become something of a tradition in recent years.
