Local News in Brief : Forum on Pipeline Route

The Gardena Valley Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a public forum next week on the Angeles Pipeline and its proposed route through Gardena.
The Gardena route has been “recently altered to avoid certain freeway overpasses,” said Jeff Schaffer, spokesman for the Southern California Pipeline System, a consortium of four oil companies that has proposed the $225-million project.
The Gardena forum will be Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Nakaoka Community Center, 1700 West 162nd St.
The project enters the South Bay in Gardena at Western Avenue and El Segundo Boulevard, running west on El Segundo to Crenshaw Boulevard, then south between the cities of Hawthorne and Gardena to Rosecrans Avenue, Schaffer said. From Rosecrans it will head east to Vermont Avenue, then turn south on Vermont to Alondra Boulevard.
The pipeline heads east on Alondra, then splits at Alondra and Avalon boulevards, Schaffer said. One section will head south through the cities of Carson and Wilmington and the other will go east on Alondra to Atlantic Avenue, then south to Long Beach.
The pipeline, which would transport 330,000 gallons of crude oil a day to refineries in Wilmington and Long Beach, is an alternative to having 1,650 trucks transport the oil using Southern California freeways, said spokesman Al Swanson.
