Typhoon Nina headed out to sea after slashing across the Philippines, leaving thousands homeless and 363 people dead. The typhoon struck hardest at the tip of Sorsagon province, 250 miles southeast of Manila, where huge waves flooded the ferry port of Matnog and took at least 275 lives. The typhoon then swept across southern Luzon province, buffeting Manila with wind gusts and heavy rain before moving into the South China Sea.
