Capistrano Valley Favored in Tournament

Capistrano Valley High School, with 7-foot center Jim Waikle and 6-10 forward Steve McCaughey, is the favorite to win the 18th Laguna Beach boys’ basketball tournament scheduled to begin Tuesday in the Artists’ gymnasium.
The 14-team tournament features some talented players, including Leo Parker (Tustin), Jerry Babe (Katella), Erik Martin (Whittier Christian), James Moses (Serra), Geoff Probst (Corona del Mar), Anthony White (Compton) and Tony Rodriguez (Warren).
Katella is the defending champion, and Corona del Mar was the runner-up last season. The championship is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 5, at 7:30 p.m.
The first-round pairings:
Tuesday: 3 p.m.--Corona del Mar vs. San Clemente; 4:30--Lynwood vs. Huntington Beach; 6--Santa Ana Valley vs. Compton.
Wednesday: 3 p.m.--Katella vs. Whittier Christian; 4:30--Dana Hills vs. Warren; 6--Serra vs. winner of Lynwood-Huntington Beach; 7:30--Capistrano Valley vs. winner of Santa Ana Valley-Compton.
