Bard’s Mark Missed

We have been enjoying the new format of the Calendar section and so decided to take in the performance of Saddleback’s play “Two Gentlemen of Verona.” Our decision to see this performance was based on our previous good experiences with community/college theater and on Cathy de Mayo’s review (“Saddleback’s ‘Two Gentlemen of Verona’ as ‘California Promise,’ ” Calendar, Nov. 12).
It was absolutely terrible. We couldn’t believe that she had actually seen the production! She may not be a Champlin or Bernheimer, but she can at least be honest.
We enjoy Shakespeare classical or mod, and we know the story line, but this was just plain poor acting and characterization. They knew their lines beautifully--but so did the dog, and he was in character the whole time.
Next time we won’t put much weight on Ms. de Mayo’s review.
