Famine Peril in Ethiopia

Regarding “Ethiopia--Will Relief Be in Time?” by Scott Kraft (Part I, Dec. 17).
The Reagan Administration deserves a round of applause for its prompt response to the latest Ethiopian famine threat. They could have put a lot of energy into blaming the Marxist government, but instead chose to get on with the job of saving as many lives as possible.
The United States has pledged an additional 120,000 tons of grain, bringing the total commitment to 245,000 tons this fiscal year. We have also agreed to help pay for transportation within Ethiopia, something we’ve refused to do in the past.
The hungry men, women and children of Ethiopia are not Marxist, capitalist, or any other “-ists.” They are simply people in need.
I’m proud that my government was willing to set ideology aside and act quickly to aid the hungry.
