Oregon State Comes Back to Defeat UCLA, 73-68

CORVALLIS, Ore. — Gary Knox scored 19 points and Gary Payton added 14, all in the second half, as Oregon State came from behind to beat UCLA 73-68 in a Pacific 10 game Sunday.
The victory gave the Beavers sole possession of third place in the Pac-10 with a 6-4 record, 12-7 overall. UCLA dropped half a game back to 6-5 and 10-11.
The Bruins, led by 19 points from Pooh Richardson, never trailed until Knox hit a jumper in the first four minutes of the second half for a 35-34 Oregon State lead.
UCLA’s last lead came with 14:02 left to play as Craig Jackson, who had 12 points, scored on a followup for a 40-39 Bruin margin.
Oregon State’s Bob Cavell hit a jumper from the left corner and Payton duplicated from the right side for a 43-40 Beaver lead.
Bill Sherwood, who had 16 points, sparked a 9-4 Oregon State run for a 52-46 lead with 9:25 left to play.
The Bruins got within five at 60-55 on a driving layup and free throw by Richardson with 5:50 remaining but Payton twice sliced through the key for layups. Oregon State’s ball control and free throws kept the Beavers ahead.
The Bruins jumped to a 11-2 lead after after 5:20 in the first half and were up 21-10 with 8:50 remaining before halftime. Oregon State started hitting and finished the half with a 14-2 run to tie the game at 27-27 at intermission.
