Somalia’s National Security Court sentenced eight men to death by firing squad for plotting to overthrow the government in 1982, the official Somali News Agency reported. The condemned men include Brig. Gen. Ismail Ali Abokor, Somalia’s third vice president at the time, and former Foreign Minister Omar Arteh Qalib, it said. The names of the others were not immediately available. The defendants were detained without trial in 1982 and accused of plotting to overthrow President Mohamed Siad Barre in alliance with an unnamed foreign power. No reason has ever been given for the long delay in bringing the cases to court.
