A 22-year-old security guard, who witnesses say had been threatened after evicting an unruly patron from a Santa Ana bar, was fatally shot early Sunday as he stood in the doorway in front of the business, authorities said.
The incident occurred about 1 a.m. at the Piccolo Club in the 2200 block of West First Street. Charles Hymes of Santa Ana was pronounced dead on arrival at Fountain Valley Regional Hospital with a gunshot wound to the neck, Santa Ana police said.
Witnesses said shots appeared to come from individuals seated in a vehicle in a parking lot next to the club. However, authorities have no description of the car and no suspects have been identified, police said.
Witnesses said Hymes, who was in uniform at the time of the incident, had been threatened Saturday night after ordering a male patron from the bar for creating a disturbance. However, police had no information on the nature of the threat.
