U.N. Envoy Leaves Jordan for Egypt

AMMAN, Jordan — U.N. envoy Marrack Goulding left Jordan for Egypt on Sunday, saying there is an urgent need to resolve the Arab-Israeli conflict.
“This visit now, like my tour of the area in January, has confirmed that what has been going on in the occupied territories has created a new situation and has underlined the pressing need for progress towards a lasting settlement to the issue,” he told reporters after two days of talks in Amman.
Goulding, an assistant secretary general, visited Israel and the occupied territories in January to prepare a report for Secretary General Javier Perez De Cuellar.
Goulding earlier visited Egypt, Syria and Lebanon and met with Palestine Liberation Organization chairman Yasser Arafat in Tunis during his regional tour to discuss Middle East peace efforts.
