Lawyer for Brawley Accuses Assistant D.A.

NEW YORK — Offering no evidence, Alton Maddox, one of Tawana Brawley’s lawyers, Sunday accused Dutchess County Assistant Dist. Atty. Steven A. Pagones of being one of the men who abducted and assaulted the girl. Pagones strongly denied the claim.
“My response is, that’s absolutely outrageous. It’s a ridiculous statement,” Pagones said.
A source familiar with the case also cast doubt upon the accusation, saying that, although authorities are tracing Pagones’ activities, they “tend to discount the likelihood that Pagones was involved.”
Brawley, 16, says she was abducted and sexually assaulted by at least six white men, one of whom had a badge.
On the advice of Maddox and others, she has refused to cooperate with investigators.
