CAGAYAN DE ORO, Philippines — A demonstration by shantytown dwellers facing eviction forced President Corazon Aquino to scrap a planned visit to a housing project in the southern Philippines on Sunday.
About 100 squatters waved placards reading: “Welcome Mrs. Aquino, Give Us Our Land,” as the president called for national unity before 50,000 people at the city’s sports stadium. The military sealed off the area to prevent trouble.
Meanwhile, in Manila, suspected Communist assassins shot to death a soldier who was on his way to Mass on Sunday. Police said Sgt. Juanito Lapid was parking his car outside the church when four young men opened fire.
